When she returned home that evening, the door opened as soon as she inserted the key. Li Yitong, dressed in loose loungewear, looked a little tired, but her eyes shone. "You're back?"
"How did it go? Did you pass the audition?" Lin Feng asked as he changed his shoes, smelling the tomato aroma wafting from the kitchen.
"You've got it!" Li Yitong rushed over and hugged him, her voice tinged with a hint of smugness. "The second female lead, and she has quite a few scenes."
"Sure." Lin Feng pinched her cheek. "Fighter of the Destiny is a big production, it's not easy to get this role."
"But I saw Gulnazar today." Li Yitong sat down on the sofa, grabbed an apple and took a bite. "For the first time, I felt that my looks weren't good enough. She's even prettier in person than on TV, and her skin is as white as a reflector."
"Why are you comparing your looks with her?" Raymond Lam sat down next to her. "You rely on your acting skills."
"But she's acted in so many dramas after all." Li Yitong was a little unsure. "I've only filmed two dramas. I'm afraid I'll be overshadowed by her."
"Don't worry, I'll give you pointers. Look at her, she's been filming for so many years and hasn't improved much. You'll definitely be better than her."
Li Yitong leaned closer to the screen and nodded seriously: "That seems to make sense—then you'll have to give me lots of pointers later."
"No problem." Lin Feng smiled and raised an eyebrow. "But the boss's guidance didn't come for nothing."
"So what do you want?" Li Yitong blinked, then suddenly leaned in and gently pecked his lips, a sweet watermelon flavor spreading on her tongue.
"That's not enough." Lin Feng pulled her into his arms, his fingers tracing her chin. "We need to—provide more in-depth guidance."
"You're so frivolous." Li Yitong pushed him, her cheeks flushing red. "I made braised beef brisket with tomatoes, go wash your hands and eat."
The aroma of braised beef brisket filled the dining table. Li Yitong served Lin Feng a bowl of soup: "Actually, I got this role thanks to the company. Tencent is one of the investors in 'Fighter of the Destiny,' and our company has collaborated with Tencent on two hit shows, which is why they were willing to give me an audition opportunity."
"This shows that your efforts have been recognized." Raymond Lam took a sip of soup. "The Beginning and The Best of Us have helped you build a strong fan base. They dare to use you because they believe in your abilities."
Li Yitong smiled, her eyes curving into crescents: "You're amazing, managing the company so well. Now when I go out, people call me 'Li Yitong of Fengrui Film & Television,' and it makes me feel incredibly proud."
Lying in bed that night, Li Yitong nestled against Lin Feng, tracing circles on his chest with her finger: "When will you finish writing the scripts you prepared for Xiaotian and Haochun?"
"It will definitely be done before summer vacation." Lin Feng ruffled her hair.
"If they knew you wrote a script specifically for them, they'd be overjoyed," Li Yitong said with a smile. "Xiaotian might even jump for joy in your arms."
"Then you'd better be mentally prepared." Lin Feng couldn't help but laugh when he thought of Xiao Tian's loud and boisterous nature. "Hao Chun will probably just quietly say thank you, and then secretly work hard to thoroughly understand the character."
"Their personalities are so different," Li Yitong yawned, "but they're both quite cute."
"Mmm." Lin Feng lowered his head and kissed the top of her head. "Like two different flowers, each with its own beauty."
He took out his phone and sent a message to Xiaotian and Liu Haochun: "There will be a surprise during the summer vacation. Prepare well for the college entrance examination."
Soon, Xiaotian replied with a bouncy emoji: "Are you going to send us red envelopes?"
Liu Haochun replied with a "fighting" emoji: "We'll do our best."
On the afternoon of May 20th, Lin Feng parked his car on the side of the road.
My phone vibrated; it was a message from Liu Haochun: "Brother Feng, I'm out."
He looked up and saw the familiar figure at the school gate, with a simple ponytail, a black backpack, and a thin layer of sweat on her forehead, clearly having just finished a dance class. "Here," he honked the horn.
Liu Haochun's eyes lit up, and she jogged over to open the car door, a faint scent of gardenias wafting into the car as she entered. "Brother Feng, what brings you here?" she asked, a little surprised, clutching a copy of "College Entrance Examination Mathematics Past Exam Questions" in her hand.
"Whose birthday is it today?" Lin Feng asked with a smile, handing over a bottle of chilled lemonade. "We can't let our birthday person eat in the school cafeteria, can we?"
Liu Haochun's cheeks flushed instantly. He looked down and unscrewed the bottle cap: "Actually, it doesn't have to be so complicated. I can just have a bowl of noodles when I get back to my dorm tonight."
"That won't do." Lin Feng started the car. "It's my 18th birthday, it has to be a proper celebration."
He drove to a restaurant with a wooden sign that read "Northeastern Cuisine," and red lanterns swayed gently at the entrance. "This place makes authentic sweet and sour pork."
Liu Haochun followed him into the private room. Several dishes were already laid out on the table: golden and crispy sweet and sour pork, bubbling chicken in an iron pot, and a plate of braised prawns, all of which were her favorite dishes.
Lin Feng served her a bowl of rice, saying, "Try it quickly, it won't taste good when it gets cold."
Liu Haochun picked up a piece of sweet and sour pork, the sweet and sour sauce spreading on her tongue. "Delicious," she whispered, her mouth full.
"Eat more if you like it." Lin Feng put another shrimp on her plate. "You've lost weight lately. No matter how busy you are with training, you still need to eat properly."
Liu Haochun shoveled the food out of his bowl, then suddenly remembered something, took out his phone, snapped a picture, and posted it in the group chat. The caption was simple: "Birthday meal~"
The message had barely been sent when Tian Xiwei's reply came like a bombshell: "!!! Hao Chun, you've gone too far! Brother Feng actually spent your birthday with you!"
"This sweet and sour pork looks so delicious! Brother Feng is biased! He only sent me a red envelope for my birthday!"
"Waaaaah, I want to eat iron pot chicken too! Haochun, save some for me!"
Looking at the screen, Liu Haochun replied somewhat embarrassedly, "No, Brother Feng just happened to be free."
"You're free?" Xiao Tian immediately tagged Lin Feng. "Brother Feng! Did you plan this all along? You have to come with me for hot pot next time it's my birthday! The spicy kind!"
Raymond Lam smiled and replied with an "OK" emoji: "Don't worry, next time it'll be even more lively than this."
"That's more like it." Xiaotian sent a smug emoji. "Haochun, hurry up and eat, don't pay attention to me, or I'll start drooling."
Putting down his phone, Liu Haochun looked at Lin Feng, his eyes shining: "That's just how Xiaotian is, she loves to make trouble."
"It's good to have some fun." Lin Feng ladled a spoonful of chicken broth from the iron pot for her. "After you finish your college entrance exams, we'll eat together and let her make a scene."
Just then, the door to the private room was pushed open, and a waiter walked in carrying a cake. On the white cream was written in chocolate, "Happy 18th Birthday Liu Haochun," and next to it was a small rabbit made of icing, with long ears, just like her when she was dancing.
"Brother Feng, you even bought a cake?" Liu Haochun's eyes widened in surprise.
"You have to blow out candles when you turn 18, right?" Raymond Lam placed the cake on the table, lit 18 candles, and the warm yellow light shone on her face, making even the fine hairs on her skin clearly visible. "Make a wish, birthday girl."
Liu Haochun closed her eyes and clasped her hands together. The candlelight danced on her eyelashes, and many images flashed through her mind: the first time he chose her to act in a film in the classroom, the first time he taught her blocking on set, the first time she received his "good luck" message—and finally, the image that remained was of the person in front of her, smiling at her.
"Have you made a promise?" Lin Feng's voice rang in my ears.
She suddenly opened her eyes, blew out the candle, and the flame flickered one last time before turning into a wisp of smoke. "What did you wish for?" he asked with a smile.
"I won't tell you." Liu Haochun lowered her head to cut the cake, but her ears were so red they were almost bleeding. She made a wish, hoping to stay as close to him as she was now, even closer.
She pushed the biggest piece of cake in front of him: "Brother Feng, you eat it."
"You eat it, I don't really like sweets." Lin Feng pushed it back. "Pack the rest up, you can take it back to the dorm and share it with your classmates."
Liu Haochun nodded, taking small bites of cake. Cream got on the corners of her mouth, and Lin Feng took a tissue and reached out to wipe it off for her. His fingertips just touched her face.
"I can do it myself." She hurriedly wiped her mouth, her heart pounding as if it would burst out of her chest.
After finishing their meal, Lin Feng packed up the leftover food and cake. "Take the cake home, and I'll take the leftovers home for a late-night snack."
He was carrying the bag when he suddenly remembered something and took a delicate tote bag out of the trunk. "I almost forgot, it's a birthday present."
Liu Haochun took the handbag. "What's in it?" she asked curiously, trying to open it.
"We'll see when we get back." Lin Feng smiled and pressed her hand down. "There won't be any surprises if you open it now."
When the car stopped back in front of the Beijing Dance Academy Affiliated High School, Liu Haochun unbuckled his seatbelt and suddenly turned to look at him.
"Brother Feng, thank you."
"Don't thank me." Lin Feng ruffled her hair. "Go back quickly, the dorm supervisor will lock the doors if it gets late."
Liu Haochun nodded, opened the car door but didn't get out immediately. She stood outside the car, hesitated for a few seconds, and then, as if she had made up her mind, bent down and leaned close to the car window.
A soft, creamy kiss landed gently on his cheek.
"Goodbye, Brother Feng." She said this and turned to run, her ponytail drawing a flustered arc in the air before her figure quickly disappeared into the dormitory lights.
Lin Feng stood there, stunned, his hand still on the spot where she had just kissed him. He touched his cheek and suddenly smiled. This girl has become quite bold.
The car was still filled with the faint scent of gardenias. My phone vibrated in my pocket; it was a video request from Li Yitong. "Have you finished eating?"
"Just finished eating, getting ready to head back." Lin Feng started the car.
"Is Haochun happy?"
"They should be quite happy."
"Is filming going smoothly for your crew? Have you had any scenes with Gulnazar yet?"
"I just finished shooting the costume fitting photos, and she really is beautiful in person." Li Yitong straightened her hair in front of the camera. "But I did a scene rehearsal today, and the director said my emotions were more on point than hers. Don't worry, I won't lose."
"I knew you could do it."
Upstairs in the dormitory, Liu Haochun leaned against the window, watching the black car disappear at the end of the road. She opened the gift box, and the lake-blue dress shimmered softly in the moonlight.
My first day as an 18-year-old was sweeter than I had imagined.
